In a significant diplomatic move, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez arrived in Vadodara, Gujarat, early Monday morning, kicking off a three-day visit to India. This marks Sanchez’s maiden official visit to the country and the first by any Spanish head of government in a remarkable 18 years, highlighting the renewed focus on strengthening bilateral ties.
Sanchez’s visit is packed with key engagements, including high-level talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two leaders will discuss a wide range of topics, focusing on strengthening defense collaborations, boosting trade relations, and exploring cultural exchanges. The visit underlines the growing strategic partnership between India and Spain.
The Prime Minister’s visit commenced with a grand arrival at Vadodara airport around 1:30 AM. His itinerary includes a trip to Mumbai on Tuesday before he departs for Spain.
A key highlight of Sanchez’s visit is the joint inauguration of the Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) facility in Vadodara on Monday. Sanchez and Modi will participate in a vibrant roadshow, showcasing cultural performances, as they travel from the airport to the facility. This facility will be the first private sector final assembly line for military aircraft in India.
The inauguration of the TASL facility signifies the deepening defense cooperation between India and Spain. Under a landmark agreement, 40 C-295 aircraft will be built at the Vadodara facility, while aviation giant Airbus will directly deliver 16 aircraft. This joint venture will create a robust ecosystem, encompassing manufacturing, assembly, testing, qualification, delivery, and maintenance of the aircraft throughout their lifespan.
Beyond the TASL facility, the two leaders will engage in a bilateral meeting at the historic Laxmi Vilas Palace. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) will host this meeting, which will also include a luncheon. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will call on Prime Minister Sanchez during his visit.
Sanchez’s visit to India comes on the heels of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s visit, showcasing a series of back-to-back engagements between India and European leaders. The visit signifies the growing importance of India on the global stage and its strategic partnerships with key European nations.
The visit of Prime Minister Sanchez promises to be a significant milestone in India-Spain relations, fostering closer collaboration in various sectors, strengthening defense partnerships, and building a more robust and comprehensive relationship for the future.
