Spirit Airlines Expands Operations with New Crew Base at Newark Airport

Spirit Airlines (NYSE: SAVE) is expanding its operational footprint with the establishment of a new crew base for pilots at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in September 2024. This move is part of Spirit’s ongoing efforts to enhance operational reliability and maintain its position as a leading low-cost carrier.

The new pilot crew base at EWR will complement Spirit’s existing bases in Atlanta (ATL), Chicago (ORD), Dallas (DFW), Detroit (DTW), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Houston (IAH), Las Vegas (LAS), Miami (MIA), and Orlando (MCO). The strategic location of EWR within Spirit’s network and its substantial flight schedule make it an ideal location for the new base, which will initially house around 200 pilots and additional supervisors and support staff.

Newark is a major transportation hub and the second-largest carrier at EWR. Spirit’s presence at EWR has grown significantly since it launched service there in October 2016. The airline now operates up to 32 peak day departures and serves 22 destinations, including seven new destinations added in the past year.

John Bendoraitis, Spirit’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, emphasized the importance of the new crew base in supporting the airline’s growth and commitment to operational reliability. He said, “We’re continuously focused on running a strong, reliable operation, and our growth at EWR paired with the airport’s location in the nation’s largest metropolitan area make Newark ideal for our next Pilot crew base.”

Spirit has a long history of serving New Jersey travelers, and this investment further demonstrates its commitment to the Garden State. The airline has expressed gratitude to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Newark Liberty International Airport, and community partners for their support.
