Spotify Recovers from Three-Hour Outage, Reports Record Subscriber Growth

Spotify users faced a frustrating evening on Sunday as a widespread outage crippled the popular music streaming service. Over 40,000 users reported service disruptions at 9:30 pm ET, according to Downdetector. Spotify acknowledged the issue on X, promising to investigate the problem. After nearly three hours, Spotify announced that service had been restored, although some users continued to experience issues.

Despite the outage, Spotify reported strong financial performance in its second quarter earnings report. The company’s Total Monthly Active Users (MAUs) increased by 14% to 626 million in the quarter. Premium subscribers also grew significantly, reaching 246 million with an increase of 7 million subscribers. Ad-supported MAUs saw a 15% growth to 393 million.

Spotify’s strong performance is a testament to its successful execution in both music and podcasting. The company expects continued growth, projecting third-quarter revenue of $4.31 billion (4.0 billion euros) and a total of 639 million MAUs.

The outage, while a temporary setback, did little to dampen investor enthusiasm. SPOT stock is up 0.33% at $370.43 at the last check on Monday.
