Indian hockey team’s star goalkeeper PR Sreejesh couldn’t have asked for a more fitting farewell as he concluded his international career on a high note, securing a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics. Sreejesh’s final appearance on the global stage was nothing short of remarkable, leaving an indelible mark on the sport he so passionately represented throughout his illustrious journey.
In what was his last match, Sreejesh led India to a 2-1 victory over Spain in the third-place play-off, securing back-to-back bronze medals at the Olympics. The last time an Indian hockey team achieved consecutive Olympic podium finishes was in 1972. The second consecutive bronze medal was part of a 13-medal haul for the once dominant side that won gold for six Games in a row from 1928 to 1956.
As the final hooter blew, the Indian players erupted in jubilation. The team’s hard-fought success was evident in their exuberant celebrations on the field. After the match, Sreejesh recreated his memorable celebration from the Tokyo Olympics. He climbed atop the goal post, perched himself on it, and triumphantly threw his hands into the air, expressing his unbridled joy and excitement.
Sreejesh ruled out any possibility of reversing his decision to retire from international hockey. “I think this is the better way to finish an Olympic Games, with a medal. We are not going home empty-handed, that’s a great thing,” Sreejesh said on ‘Jio Cinema’. “I respect the sentiments of people (who may have wanted him to continue). But some decisions are hard, but taking a decision at the right time makes the situation more beautiful,” Sreejesh said after the match. “So, my decision stays,” he asserted, when asked if he may reconsider.
