Sri Lankan Spinner Jayawickrama Charged with Three Counts of Corruption

Sri Lankan spinner Praveen Jayawickrama has been charged with three counts of breaching the ICC anti-corruption code. The charges, announced on Thursday, relate to alleged attempts to fix international matches and Lanka Premier League games in 2021. The 25-year-old left-arm spinner is accused of failing to report approaches made to him to engage in corrupt practices.

The ICC investigation alleges that Jayawickrama deleted messages related to these approaches, further breaching the code. Specifically, he is charged under Article 2.4.4 for failing to report approaches to fix future international matches and for failing to report approaches to involve another player in fixing the 2021 Lanka Premier League.

He is also charged with obstructing the investigation under Article 2.4.7 due to the deletion of messages related to corrupt conduct. The ICC will handle both the international and Lanka Premier League charges, working in conjunction with Sri Lanka Cricket. Jayawickrama has 14 days to respond to the charges, starting August 6.
