On August 22, 2024, SriLankan Airlines, in partnership with Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka), organized a unique and memorable experience for a group of young Buddhist monks, known as ‘Samaneras.’ This special event was held in celebration of the airline’s 45th anniversary, which falls on September 1, 2024.
The Samaneras, ranging in age from five years old and up, hailed from the Ganewatta Purana Rajamaha Viharaya in Waskadubedda, Deldoova, Kalutara. They were accompanied by several revered Theros and volunteers from SriLankan Airlines. The tour was designed to provide these young monks with a first-hand glimpse into the world of aviation.
The Samaneras embarked on an educational journey through the Bandaranaike International Airport. They explored various facilities, observing the bustling activity and operational intricacies of an international hub. The highlight of the tour was an up-close experience with a parked Airbus A320 aircraft. This provided the young monks with a practical understanding of the technical and logistical aspects of aircraft operations, marking their first-ever encounter with the aviation world.
The visit was further enriched by a ceremonial almsgiving (Dana) and the offering of pirikara, held in the airport’s Silk Route Arrival Lounge. This cultural exchange fostered a deeper connection between the airline’s personnel and the monastic community, creating a moment of reflection amidst the daily hustle of airport activities.
The event was attended by SriLankan Airlines’ staff, including top management, as well as senior executives from Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka). The initiative showcased SriLankan Airlines’ commitment to cultural engagement and fostering a deeper understanding of the airline’s operations within the community.
