Students from PS 39, PS 59, PS 861, and Staten Island Academy were invited to embark on a transformative journey, transforming into marine biologists for a day at Great Kills Park.
Environmentalists from local organizations enthusiastically shared their expertise, captivating the students with interactive presentations that illuminated the rich marine life that thrives on Staten Island. The Natural Resources and Protective Association (NRPA), Great Kills National Park Service (NPS), Billion Oyster Project, Staten Island Zoo, NYC H20, Urban Park Rangers, Blue Heron Nature Center, NY/NJ Baykeeper, and Duro Workforce were among the esteemed organizations that contributed to the success of this event, fostering a profound appreciation for the local environment and inspiring students to become responsible stewards of their natural surroundings.
Throughout the day, students explored the wonders of Staten Island’s marine ecosystem, delving into topics such as marine biodiversity, water quality, and the importance of conservation. Hands-on activities and interactive exhibits further enhanced the learning experience, allowing students to engage with marine life up close and gain a deeper understanding of the delicate balance that exists within our coastal ecosystems.
