The Pittsburgh Steelers traded away star wide receiver Diontae Johnson this offseason, leaving a void in their offense. Many expected the team to acquire a replacement, but as the 2024 NFL Draft approaches, it appears they may be considering drafting a plug-and-play wide receiver.
This approach comes with risks, as George Pickens is the only established star at the position. Without a proficient route runner like Johnson, opposing teams could easily contain Pickens and limit his effectiveness.
Steelers insider Mark Kaboly recently discussed the team’s plans for the wide receiver position. Kaboly mentioned the possibility of a trade, but ruled out options such as Courtland Sutton and Tee Higgins due to financial constraints. However, he proposed Brandin Cooks of the Dallas Cowboys as a potential target.
Cooks is in the final year of his contract and the Cowboys are looking to trim expenses, making him an attractive option for the Steelers. Despite being in his 30s, Cooks remains productive, with 54 receptions, 657 receiving yards, and eight touchdowns in 2023.
Kaboly emphasized the need for the Steelers to add a receiver, dismissing the possibility of relying solely on Van Jefferson and Quez Watkins. He urged the team to consider a trade for Cooks, calling it a ‘savvy move’ that aligns with their strategic goals.
