The Pittsburgh Steelers are facing a decision on whether to exercise the fifth-year options on the contracts of quarterback Justin Fields and running back Najee Harris. Both players are entering the final year of their rookie deals, and the Steelers have until May 2nd to make a decision on their future.
General Manager Omar Khan was asked about the team’s plans for Fields and Harris during a pre-draft press conference on Monday, but he did not give a definitive answer.
“Yeah, we have ‘till May,” Khan said. “I’ve said this before we have until May 2nd to make that decision. So, we’ll focus on the draft this week, and I’m sure we’ll have some serious conversations about that next month.”
The Steelers currently have three quarterbacks who are all under contract for one year — Fields, Russell Wilson, and Kyle Allen. Harris has rushed for at least 1,000 yards in all three of his seasons while starting every game. In 2023, he totaled 1,035 yards rushing with eight touchdowns along with 29 catches for 170 yards.
The Steelers must weigh the cost of exercising the fifth-year options against the potential return on investment. If Fields or Harris plays well in 2023, the Steelers could be forced to pay them a significant amount of money in a new contract. However, if either player struggles, the Steelers could save money by allowing them to leave in free agency.
The Steelers will have to make a decision on Fields and Harris by May 2nd. Until then, the team will continue to evaluate their options and try to make the best decision for the future of the franchise.
