Stefano Pioli’s time as AC Milan manager is set to end, with the club reportedly deciding to sack him at the conclusion of the season. The decision comes after Milan’s 2-1 loss to city rivals Inter Milan, which confirmed Inter’s Serie A title triumph.
Milan, who won the Scudetto two seasons ago under Pioli, have struggled to contend for the title this year, with Inter holding a comfortable 17-point lead. The defeat to Inter was the latest in a series of disappointing results for Milan, who have been inconsistent throughout the campaign.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Pioli’s fate has already been sealed, despite public statements from the club suggesting otherwise. Milan are said to be actively searching for a new manager, with Thiago Motta of Bologna emerging as a potential candidate.
Pioli has faced pressure at Milan on several occasions since taking over in 2019, but has managed to retain his position. However, the club’s hierarchy has now seemingly lost patience with the Italian coach.
Speaking after the loss to Inter, Pioli expressed uncertainty about his future: “I don’t know. Inzaghi seemed to be struggling 14 months ago according to the media and look what he achieved after that. I am happy here, I work well and I think the team has margin for improvement. We’ll see where we all are at the end of the season and discuss it.”
It remains to be seen who will succeed Pioli at Milan, but Thiago Motta is understood to be high on the club’s list of targets.
