Stellantis, the multinational automotive giant, is facing another recall wave affecting a significant number of its vehicles. The company is recalling 20,755 plug-in hybrid SUVs in the U.S. due to concerns that the brake pedal might disengage during braking. The recall encompasses 2024-2025 model year Alfa Romeo Tonale PHEV SUVs and 2024 model year Dodge Hornet PHEV SUVs. To rectify the issue, Stellantis will reinforce the brake pedal free of charge to owners. This problem extends beyond the U.S., with 2,280 vehicles in Canada, 134 in Mexico, and 30,517 vehicles outside North America also affected. Stellantis has acknowledged 15 instances where the brake pedal disengaged while braking, including one accident with no reported injuries.
In addition to the SUV recall, Stellantis is also recalling 31,676 model year 2020-2023 Ram 1500 Classic vehicles due to concerns that the mirror glass may detach from the driver’s side heated trailer tow rearview mirror. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced this recall. To address this issue, Stellantis dealers will replace the mirror glass at no cost to the customer.
These recent recalls follow a string of other safety concerns for Stellantis vehicles. Last month, the company recalled 154,032 Jeep plug-in hybrid SUVs in the U.S. due to fire risks. Earlier this month, Stellantis recalled 129,313 Ram 1500 vehicles because the turn signal self-canceling feature might malfunction.
Stellantis shares closed down 2.5% at $12.91 on Tuesday, reflecting the ongoing concerns around these safety issues. The stock has seen a significant decline of 44% year-to-date. This recent wave of recalls emphasizes the importance of timely safety checks and swift corrective action from automakers. As these issues impact both driver and passenger safety, it is crucial that Stellantis takes swift and comprehensive steps to resolve these problems and regain customer trust.
