Tired of your onions sprouting, softening, or even going moldy? You’re not alone! While many people instinctively toss onions in the fridge, it turns out that’s a recipe for disaster.
According to YouTube chef, Jerry James Stone, the fridge is actually the worst place for onions. Why? Because they thrive in cool, dry environments with good ventilation – the exact opposite of a cold, moist refrigerator.
So, where should you store them? Think pantry or a cool, dark space like a cellar or garage. A pantry is ideal as it allows for good air circulation, which is crucial for onions as they naturally release moisture.
But what about those plastic bags they come in from the supermarket? Jerry advises removing them before storage. The plastic traps moisture, leading to unwanted mold growth. Instead, opt for breathable storage options like mesh bags or even simply storing them in a basket.
Here’s a handy tip for long-term storage: Never store onions near potatoes. Onions release a gas called ethylene, which can cause potatoes to sprout, ruining your stash. Garlic, on the other hand, enjoys the same environment as onions, making them perfect roommates!
For those quick meals, a bowl on the counter or in a cupboard is fine for a day or two. However, if you want to enjoy the flavor of your onions for months, remember to store them properly in a cool, dry, dark place, away from moisture and ethylene-producing culprits like potatoes. Happy storing!
