Ludhiana’s stray cattle menace continues to pose a threat to residents, despite the Municipal Corporation (MC) collecting over ₹20 crore as cow cess. The MC has struggled to make significant headway in addressing the problem, according to residents. Officials attribute the issue to a shortage of space to shelter the stray animals. Over 1,800 stray cattle have already been relocated to various gaushalas in and around the city, with the MC bearing the expenses for their daily maintenance. MC Commissioner Sandeep Rishi announced plans to construct three more sheds for stray cattle, housing over 400 animals. He has also called on gaushala authorities and other stakeholders to contact the MC for additional space. However, stray cattle remain a common sight in posh residential areas, including Model Town Extension, Kitchlu Nagar, Hambran Road, and Sarabha Nagar. The MC’s proposed measures to deter dairy farmers from abandoning cows on city roads, such as installing tracking chips, have yet to materialize. Residents have expressed concern over the problem. Local shop-owner Suresh said, “The sight of stray cattle fighting on roads has become too common. This poses serious risks to pedestrians and motorists. Despite the substantial funds collected as cow cess, lack of tangible action is disheartening.” Priya, a resident, shared similar sentiments, highlighting the safety hazards and impact on cleanliness and hygiene posed by stray cattle. She urged authorities to take decisive steps to address the issue.
