A strong earthquake jolted eastern Taiwan on Tuesday, jolting residents and sending buildings shaking. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at a depth of 87 kilometers, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). While the earthquake did not cause any immediate reports of casualties or damage, it follows a series of recent seismic activities in the region.
Just two weeks prior, a powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter Scale struck Taiwan’s eastern shores, leaving four people dead and over 700 others injured. The quake that struck Hualien City on April 3 killed four people and injured more than 700 others, the National Fire Agency said.
The NCS noted that Monday also saw several earthquakes striking Hualien County, in eastern Taiwan, within a short span of 9 minutes. The seismic activity occurred between 5:08 pm and 5:17 pm (local time).
The US Geological Survey (USGS) also issued a report on the earthquake, stating that it was a “notable quake” with a magnitude of 6.5, located 11 km NE of Hualien City, Taiwan.
