Sumit Nagal has soared to a new career-high ranking of 68 in the latest ATP Rankings, solidifying his position as the fourth highest-ranked Indian man since the ranking system’s introduction in 1973. This significant achievement comes on the back of his historic Grand Slam appearances, propelling him five spots higher in the rankings.
Nagal’s rise surpasses Sashi Menon, with whom he previously shared the record for joint-fourth highest ranking of 71. He now trails behind Somdev Devvarman (62), Ramesh Krishnan (23), and Vijay Amritraj (18) on the all-time list of highest-ranked Indian men.
This year, Nagal made his debut at the prestigious French Open, though he exited in the opening round. He also made his maiden appearance in the men’s singles main draw at Wimbledon, also bowing out in the first round. Despite the early exits, these appearances mark a significant milestone in his career.
The 26-year-old Nagal, who has secured his spot in the upcoming Paris Olympics, is the first Indian in five years to participate in the Wimbledon men’s singles main draw. Furthermore, he is only the second Indian player to qualify for the singles event in consecutive Summer Games since Leander Paes’ impressive run from 1992 to 2000.
Adding to his impressive achievements, Nagal has secured two Challenger titles this season, demonstrating his consistent progress and strong form. His victories at the Heilbronn Challenger and the Chennai Open ATP Challenger solidify his position as a rising force in Indian tennis. With his current momentum and dedication, Nagal is poised to continue his upward trajectory and achieve even greater heights in the world of professional tennis.
