In a heartwarming message from space, Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams extended her warm wishes for a Happy Diwali to everyone celebrating the festival of lights. Sharing a video message from the International Space Station (ISS), Williams expressed her unique perspective on celebrating Diwali from 260 miles above Earth.
“Greetings from the ISS. I want to extend my warmest wishes for a Happy Diwali to everyone celebrating today at the White House and around the world. This year I have the unique opportunity to celebrate Diwali from 260 miles above the earth on the ISS…” said Williams.
She went on to emphasize the cultural significance of Diwali, reflecting on her upbringing and how her father instilled a deep appreciation for Indian traditions and festivals, including Diwali. “My father kept and shared his cultural roots by teaching us about Diwali and other Indian festivals. Diwali is a time of joy as goodness in the world prevails…” she said.
Williams also expressed gratitude for the White House’s Diwali celebration and acknowledged the contributions of the Indian-American community. “Thank You to the President and the Vice President for celebrating Diwali with our community today and for recognising the many contributions of our community.”
