Super Typhoon Yagi, currently traversing the northern region of the South China Sea, is affecting flight operations at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). The Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) has implemented contingency plans to minimize disruptions, working closely with all relevant parties.
Despite the typhoon’s influence, flight operations at HKIA are running smoothly today. However, the Airport Emergency Centre has been activated, and 38 flights have been cancelled throughout the day. As the winds from Super Typhoon Yagi intensify, tonight’s and tomorrow morning’s flight schedules are anticipated to be significantly disrupted. To manage the orderly resumption of flights tomorrow, AAHK will deploy its Flight Rescheduling Control System.
The airport remains on high alert, ensuring all facilities are secure and prepared for the resumption of flight operations. Once the No. 8 Signal is issued, the airport will activate its Queue Ticket System for taxis, allowing passengers to obtain queue numbers via ticket machines or a mobile app, eliminating the need for passengers to wait in line. A temporary rest area has been established in the terminal, equipped with chairs, mobile charging stations, and other amenities.
To assist passengers during this time, additional staff have been deployed, and restaurants and convenience stores at HKIA will extend their hours while stocking extra food and beverages. To ensure an adequate workforce to handle passenger needs, AAHK has opened two employee rest centers and arranged shuttle buses to transport staff to and from the airport.
AAHK advises passengers to check with their airlines for the latest flight updates and to only proceed to the airport once their seats and flight times are confirmed.
