Supermarket Bank Holiday Opening Hours: Lidl, Sainsbury’s, Aldi and More

As the nation prepares for the final bank holiday before Christmas, many are planning barbeques and other festivities. While most of England and Wales will enjoy a day off on Monday, August 26th, supermarket staff will still be working. For those who need to stock up on essentials beyond Sunday, August 25th, it’s important to be aware of potential changes in opening hours.

All major UK supermarkets are expected to adjust their operating hours for the bank holiday weekend. To avoid disappointment, it’s best to check the opening times of your local store before heading out.

Lidl:

Lidl shoppers will find all branches open as usual on Saturday, August 24th, and Sunday, August 25th. On bank holiday Monday, August 26th, stores in England and Wales outside the M25 will be open from 8am to 8pm. Within the M25, branches will be open between 8am and 10pm. Stores in Scotland will operate their regular hours on August 26th. It’s advisable to utilize the Lidl store finder tool on their website for specific location-based opening times.

Aldi:

The budget supermarket chain has confirmed standard opening hours across its branches on Saturday, August 24th, and Sunday, August 25th. Stores in England and Wales will then open until 8pm on Monday, August 26th, while Scottish branches will close at 10pm as usual. Double-check your local branch’s opening hours using Aldi’s store locator tool.

M&S:

M&S shoppers may find their local branch shuts early on Monday, August 26th. While stores remain open over the weekend, allowing shoppers to indulge in M&S’s renowned baked goods and food, opening times might vary for shops inside the M25 compared to those outside London.

Asda:

Asda is yet to confirm its opening times for the bank holiday. Last year, the shop maintained its usual opening and closing times over the August bank holiday weekend, offering shoppers budget-friendly deals. However, 24-hour shops implemented a closing time on bank holiday Monday, which may happen again on August 26th. Check the Asda online store finder to see your local supermarket’s opening times.

Sainsbury’s:

Most larger Sainsbury’s stores will be open from 8am to 8pm, while smaller branches will operate their normal hours from 7am to 10pm or 11pm in some areas.

Tesco:

Regular hours remain in place at Tesco stores over the weekend. On Monday, hours for superstores and large Express stores will vary, opening at the later time of 8am and closing at 6pm. Express stores will stay open as usual, closing at 10pm or 11pm.

Waitrose:

Shops remain open for business as usual on Saturday and Sunday this week. However, the vast majority of Waitrose stores will have shorter opening times on bank holiday Monday from 10am to 4pm. Those who live near a Little Waitrose may benefit from a slightly later closing time on Monday, August 26th.

Morrisons:

Morrisons stores will open from 6am to 10pm on Saturday, with the usual Sunday opening times of 10am to 4pm this bank holiday weekend. On Monday, August 26th, opening times will be reduced from 7am until 8pm in larger stores. Smaller McColl’s stores, now part of the Morrisons brand, are expected to stay open as usual on Monday. Morrisons Daily may also open as usual, but it’s best to check online beforehand.
