Prepare to be mesmerized by a rare and breathtaking astronomical spectacle this August – a Supermoon Blue Moon. This captivating event combines two celestial phenomena, making it a truly unique sight.
The Supermoon Blue Moon, also known as the ‘Sturgeon Moon’, will grace the night sky on August 19th. This celestial event occurs when a full moon coincides with the Moon being at its closest point to Earth in its orbit, known as perigee. This proximity makes the moon appear larger and brighter than usual, hence the term ‘Supermoon’.
Adding to the uniqueness, this Supermoon coincides with a blue moon – the second full moon within a single calendar month. Although the name suggests a blue hue, the moon will not actually appear blue. It’s simply a reference to the unusual occurrence of two full moons in a month.
This Supermoon Blue Moon marks the first of four consecutive supermoons this year, with subsequent ones expected on September 18, October 17, and November 15.
