Supreme Court Allows Antitrust Lawsuit Against FIFA to Proceed

The high court’s order upholds a lower court ruling in favor of Relevent, which filed the lawsuit in 2019. The suit stemmed from FIFA’s decision to block Relevent’s plans to host a Spanish league match between Barcelona and Girona at Miami Gardens, Florida, and the USSF’s refusal to allow a league match between two Ecuadorian teams to be played in the United States.
A district court initially dismissed the lawsuit, but a federal appeals court panel unanimously reinstated it. The Biden administration supported Relevent’s position before the Supreme Court.
