Supreme Court Begins 5-Day Special Lok Adalat to Resolve Disputes Amicably

The Supreme Court initiated a five-day Special Lok Adalat on Monday, aiming to resolve disputes amicably. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud urged individuals to actively participate in the Special Lok Adalat, promoting the speedy and peaceful resolution of their cases. Highlighting a successful case from a previous Lok Adalat, CJI Chandrachud recounted a divorce case where both parties, after coming to the Lok Adalat, decided to stay together. He emphasized that the Lok Adalat system fosters a positive environment for reconciliation and resolution.

The Lok Adalat, scheduled to be held throughout this week, will be conducted by seven benches of the Supreme Court. The primary focus of the Special Lok Adalat is to settle minor cases, including service disputes, labor disputes, and land acquisition cases. This initiative, organized from July 29th to August 3rd, commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s establishment. The Special Lok Adalat sessions will commence daily after 2 PM, with each bench comprising two Supreme Court judges, a senior advocate, and an Advocate-on-Record.

Expressing his satisfaction with the initiative, CJI DY Chandrachud highlighted the success of the Lok Adalat system. He stressed that the collaborative efforts of the Bar, Supreme Court judges, and extensive groundwork undertaken by High Courts, State Governments, and Insurance Companies have contributed to the initiative’s effectiveness. He underscored the significance of addressing minor cases, as they often reach the Supreme Court, necessitating swift and efficient resolution.

The participation of Bar members alongside judges in the Lok Adalat panels conveys a powerful message about unity and commitment to justice, particularly for citizens involved in these minor cases. CJI Chandrachud expressed his hope that the success of this Lok Adalat will lead to its institutionalization within the Supreme Court for future initiatives.
