The Supreme Court on Tuesday, July 30, intervened in the divorce proceedings of renowned chef Kunal Kapur, ordering a stay on the Delhi High Court’s verdict granting him a divorce. The High Court had previously ruled in favor of Kapur, citing the wife’s behavior as lacking dignity and empathy towards him. This decision was based on Kapur’s appeal against an earlier family court order denying him a divorce.
The High Court had emphasized that making defamatory and unsubstantiated accusations against a spouse publicly constitutes cruelty. They deemed the wife’s conduct towards Kapur as disgraceful to the core principles of marriage, suggesting that he should not be compelled to endure such an agonizing living situation.
However, the Supreme Court, in a move towards reconciliation, has issued a notice to Kunal Kapur on a plea filed by his wife and referred the case to the Mediation Centre. The court hopes to facilitate a settlement between the estranged couple, who married in April 2008 and have a son born in 2012.
Kapur had previously accused his wife of disrespecting his parents and humiliating him. Conversely, the wife alleged that Kapur was fabricating stories to mislead the court, claiming she always maintained a loving and loyal relationship with him. She asserted that Kapur intentionally kept her in the dark while concocting false narratives to obtain a divorce.
