In a landmark move to enhance transparency and accessibility, the Supreme Court of India has announced the integration of WhatsApp messaging services with its IT systems. This initiative, driven by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, will revolutionize the dissemination of case information to advocates.
Commencing immediately, advocates will receive automated WhatsApp messages regarding case filings. Additionally, cause lists will be sent directly to their mobile phones as soon as they are published. This service promises to streamline daily work habits, eliminate paper usage, and contribute to environmental conservation.
Justice Chandrachud emphasized the significance of this move, stating, “In the 75th year of its existence, the Supreme Court of India has launched a small initiative with the potential for a big-bang impact.” He further highlighted the ubiquitous nature of WhatsApp and its role as a powerful communication tool.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta hailed the initiative as another revolutionary step taken by the Court. Under Chief Justice Chandrachud’s guidance, the Supreme Court has been actively pursuing the digitization of judicial operations. The government has allocated ₹ 7,000 crore for the e-court project, demonstrating its commitment to improving accessibility for litigants and lawyers.
Furthermore, the Supreme Court has provided an official WhatsApp number. However, it is essential to note that this number will not accept any messages or calls.
This move towards digitization aligns with the Supreme Court’s ongoing efforts to modernize and enhance the delivery of justice in India.
