Surrey has once again claimed the crown as English County Champions, marking their third consecutive victory in the prestigious competition. The London-based county’s triumph was confirmed on Friday following Somerset’s defeat against Lancashire, effectively ending Somerset’s hopes of securing their first-ever Championship title.
Surrey’s dominance throughout the season was evident in their performance at the Oval, where they secured a resounding 10-wicket victory over Durham. This win marked their sixth victory in seven home matches during the first-class competition, showcasing their strength and consistency on their own turf.
The title win adds another feather to Surrey’s cap, making them the first team since Yorkshire in the 1960s to achieve a three-peat in the County Championship.
Meanwhile, Somerset’s hopes of challenging for the title were dashed after a 168-run defeat against Lancashire. Despite putting up a fight, they ultimately fell short and are now unable to catch their rivals.
As the Championship season draws to a close, Surrey will face Essex at Chelmsford in the final round, while Somerset prepares to host Hampshire.
