Amidst an ongoing sports-gambling suspension, defensive lineman Shawn Lemon has rejoined the Montreal Alouettes for practice following his appeal of the suspension. Lemon, who was initially suspended indefinitely on April 24, took part in training camp activities on Tuesday. The suspension stemmed from an investigation that revealed Lemon had placed bets on league games in 2021, including one involving his team at the time, the Calgary Stampeders. Notably, the league emphasized that there was no evidence suggesting that any games were compromised due to Lemon’s wagering. While the CFL and the Alouettes have not yet provided an explanation for Lemon’s return to practice, both parties have indicated that a statement will be issued. By filing an appeal, Lemon has gained the eligibility to resume playing and practicing until an arbitrator reaches a verdict on his appeal. Prior to the announcement of his suspension, Lemon had declared his retirement two weeks earlier, despite having signed a one-year extension with Montreal during the off-season. The 35-year-old defensive lineman played a significant role in Montreal’s Grey Cup victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers last year. After signing Lemon, the Alouettes achieved a remarkable 12-4 record, inclusive of playoffs, with Lemon contributing 26 tackles, nine sacks, two interceptions, and one forced fumble in 13 regular-season games. Additionally, he achieved his 100th career CFL sack during the season.
