Sutra: Two Platforms Unveils Multilingual LLM, Zappy Messaging App for India

Two Platforms Unveils Sutra LLM, Zappy Messaging App for India Market

Silicon Valley-based deep tech startup Two Platforms Inc. has released a multilingual large language model (LLM) called Sutra and a beta version of a multilingual LLM-based chatbot called Geniya. Backed by billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Jio Platforms and South Korea’s Naver Corp, the artificial reality startup also plans to soon release an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered messaging and social app called Zappy in India, according to Two Platform’s founder and CEO, Pranav Mistry.

“Sutra is our mission to fix the language gap in AI language models. We are committed to pioneering AI solutions for non-English markets. We believe our Sutra models will unlock AI growth opportunities in large economies such as India, Korea, Japan, and the MEA (Middle East and Africa) region,” Mistry said in an interview.

Sutra: A Foundational, Not Fine-Tuned Approach

Unlike most other startups and companies that are building ‘local’ or ‘Indic’ LLMs for India by fine-tuning global LLMs, Two Platforms has built a foundational, not a fine-tuned model.

Sutra uses two different transformer architectures, developed by Google, to predict the next word in a sequence of text based on large, complex data sets. The multilingual LLM Sutra has combined an LLM architecture with a Neural Machine Translation (NMT) one to address the lack of specialized training data while translating specific pairs of languages and to better handle idiomatic expressions and colloquial language.

“Our specialized NMT models are significantly smaller in parameter size, requiring much less data for training,” Mistry said. “This saves almost five to eight times in costs.”

Zappy: AI-Powered Messaging and Social App

Two Platforms is also developing Zappy, an AI-powered messaging and social app that will integrate AI capabilities. The app aims to provide users with personalized experiences and innovative features.

India’s Growing Landscape of Multilingual LLMs

India has witnessed a surge in the development of local multilingual LLMs, with companies like Sarvam AI, Tech Mahindra, and Krutrim contributing to the space. These companies recognize the need for faster, more affordable, multilingual, and energy-efficient LLMs to bridge existing market gaps. Two Platforms hopes that Sutra will be one of the companies that “fills this gap.”
