Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim to Receive Honorary Doctorate from Alma Mater

Former Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim will receive an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, Syracuse University, at its commencement ceremony on May 12 at the JMA Wireless Dome. Boeheim, who earned both his undergraduate degree in 1966 and his master’s in 1973 from Syracuse, will be awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters degree. This honor recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to society through humanitarian and philanthropic efforts.

Boeheim, 79, retired as head coach of the Syracuse basketball team in 2023 following a 47-year tenure. During his illustrious career, he led the Orange to a national championship in 2003, three Olympic gold medals as an assistant coach for the United States men’s basketball team, and induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005.

Boeheim’s dedication to Syracuse University extends beyond the basketball court. He has served as a member of the university’s Board of Trustees since 2006 and has been a vocal advocate for higher education and the importance of giving back to the community.

The honorary doctorate is a fitting tribute to a man who has not only achieved great success on the court but has also made a significant impact off the court. Boeheim’s legacy will continue to inspire generations of Syracuse students and basketball fans alike.
