T-Mobile Fuels Jacksonville’s Autonomous Vehicle Future with 5G Private Network

T-Mobile is taking a major step toward the future of transportation by partnering with Miller Electric Company to deploy a 5G private network in Jacksonville, Florida.

This network will power a fleet of autonomous vehicles (AVs) as part of the city’s ambitious ‘Ultimate Urban Circulator’ program, showcasing T-Mobile’s leadership in the burgeoning autonomous vehicle market.

The partnership will see Miller Electric utilize T-Mobile’s Advanced Network Solutions to support its new fully autonomous shuttles.

These shuttles will traverse a 3-mile route connecting EverBank Stadium, home to the Jacksonville Jaguars, to the city’s vibrant waterfront hub.

T-Mobile’s 5G private network will provide a critical layer of secure and reliable communication for the AVs.

This includes real-time data transmission from onboard sensors, enabling seamless navigation and monitoring. Passengers will also benefit from high-quality audio and video feeds, allowing them to connect with shuttle employees.

The network’s robust capabilities will allow for real-time video surveillance, facilitating two-way audio and video communication between passengers and employees.

Craig Bowman, Director of Technology at Miller Electric, highlighted the “turnkey” solution’s ability to enable the vehicles to navigate alongside other traffic while providing the necessary bandwidth for seamless communication.

“5G is the key that will unlock the autonomous vehicle future that science fiction has teased us with for years,”

said Mishka Dehghan, SVP, Strategy, Product, and Solutions Engineering, T-Mobile Business Group.

The Jacksonville project is a testament to T-Mobile’s commitment to developing innovative solutions for smart cities.

This deployment aligns with the company’s broader vision of creating a connected future powered by its advanced 5G network.

The autonomous shuttles are expected to be operational by mid-2025, marking the first phase of Jacksonville’s ‘Ultimate Urban Circulator’ program.

This phase will lay the groundwork for expanding automated shuttles to nearby neighborhoods, creating a truly connected and efficient transportation network.

In addition to this exciting development, T-Mobile is poised to report its earnings this week.

Analysts anticipate revenue of $20 billion and earnings per share (EPS) of $2.42. The company’s recent quarterly results showed a strong performance, with T-Mobile raising guidance for its 2024 postpaid net customer growth.

TMUS shares are currently trading lower by 0.83% to $220.93.

Investors are closely watching the company’s progress in the 5G space, as it continues to invest heavily in infrastructure and innovative solutions.
