TV Acronyms Explained: What is ABL, WCG, MLA, eARC & More | You Asked Ep. 38

This episode of “You Asked” is an on-the-road edition that tackles some of the most commonly asked questions about TV acronyms, including ABL, WCG, MLA, and eARC.

**Can SDR content trigger ABL on OLED TVs?**
Yes, SDR content can trigger ABL, which is a feature that reduces the brightness of OLED TVs to prolong their lifespan. However, ABL is less likely to be triggered by SDR content than HDR content due to lower brightness levels.

**Wide color gamut and HDR**
HDR and wide color gamut are not intrinsically linked. HDR is about dynamic range of brightness, while wide color gamut expands the color palette. Both HDR and WCG content requires a TV that can support these features.

**Any downsides to MLA OLED technology?**
MLA (micro lens array) is a technology used in certain premium OLED panels to improve brightness. There are no known downsides to MLA, and it appears to be a pure win for OLED TVs.

**eARC on HDMI 2.1 ports**
eARC (enhanced Audio Return Channel) allows for lossless, uncompressed audio over an HDMI connection. While it would be advantageous for the eARC port on a TV to also be an HDMI 2.1 port for those using an A/V receiver as a video switcher, in most cases, it is not necessary.
