A 25-year-old Niagara man has been arrested in connection to a shooting and assault that occurred in Peterborough, Ontario.

On November 24, 2023, a 28-year-old man was dropped off at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre with a gunshot wound. A second 28-year-old man was also taken to the hospital later that day with undisclosed injuries. An investigation led to an arrest at a residence in Peterborough at the time, and police were seeking another suspect.

On January 9, 2024, officers responded to an assault at a residence where a man sustained a serious head injury. A suspect was identified in the case.

A four-month investigation culminated in a search warrant being executed at a residence in Thorold, Ontario, leading to the arrest of a 25-year-old Niagara man for both incidents.

The man has been charged with aggravated assault, unauthorized possession of a firearm, and other weapons-related offenses in connection with the November 24 shooting. For the January 9 assault, he faces charges of aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. The accused is scheduled to appear in court in Peterborough for both incidents on Friday.

A man in Pennsylvania was arrested after attempting to shoot a pastor during a church service. The incident, captured on camera, shows the suspect, Bernard Polite, pointing a gun at Pastor Glenn Germany. According to Germany, Polite claimed to have been influenced by voices in his mind telling him to carry out the shooting. While Polite was apprehended, police discovered the body of his family member, Derek Polite, who had been shot to death at his residence near the church. The suspect is facing charges of aggravated assault and attempted homicide.

The Saskatoon Police Major Crime Section is investigating the city’s ninth homicide of 2024. The victim, a 30-year-old man, was initially transported to the hospital after an aggravated assault on April 15 but succumbed to his injuries this week. The incident occurred at a residence on Chandler Place. Witnesses reported an altercation outside another residence on the block. A 37-year-old man has been arrested in Saint John, New Brunswick, for allegedly committing aggravated assault and forcible confinement at an encampment in the city. Police discovered a 42-year-old man being held captive for two days within the encampment. Emergency responders transported the victim to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Currently, the accused is in custody and scheduled to appear in court on May 28th. A Maricopa County Superior Court judge has acquitted former prison Lieutenant Mark Hasz in an aggravated assault case, marking the second time the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office has failed to secure a conviction against him. Hasz, who had previously spoken out about concerns within the prison system, was fired and charged with aggravated assault following a use-of-force incident in July 2020. His defense team was reportedly barred from presenting evidence of his whistleblowing activities during the first trial, but the judge made no such ruling in this second trial.

27-year-old Hermenegilda Marquez was arrested and charged with aggravated assault after a video emerged showing her physically attacking a school bus driver. The incident occurred on April 11, 2024, after Marquez boarded the bus and accused the driver of speaking ill about her daughter. Police arrived at the scene and found the driver with minor injuries. Marquez allegedly struck the driver multiple times and pulled her hair, all while 11 children were still on board the bus. She was ultimately removed from the vehicle with the help of her boyfriend and later identified by police. During questioning, Marquez invoked her right to an attorney, showing no emotion when informed of the felony charges against her.

A Brampton man is facing charges after two men were shot in Brantford’s city centre on Sunday night. The incident occurred around 8 p.m. at a home on King Street, resulting in two men being hospitalized with gunshot wounds. One victim remains in critical condition as of Monday morning. The suspect was apprehended shortly after the shooting and a firearm believed to be used in the incident has been recovered. The investigation is ongoing, and police do not believe the incident was random.

A 12-year-old girl was attacked with a metal Stanley mug by a classmate at Pennbrook Middle School in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, last week. The victim was beaten unprovoked by a 13-year-old boy, who had reportedly been a concern prior to the attack. The school was placed on temporary lockdown while police and medical personnel responded to the scene. The victim was released from the hospital and is recovering at home, while the 13-year-old suspect is facing multiple charges, including aggravated assault.
