A Night for Sports Icons: Beckham and Federer Documentaries Premiere at Whitby Hotel

Last night at the Whitby Hotel in New York City, Anna Wintour and Will Welch welcomed guests to celebrate the premiere of a documentary recounting the life and career of football star David Beckham, directed by actor and director Fisher Stevens. Coincidentally, tennis great Roger Federer was also at the Whitby for the debut of his own documentary. The event kicked off with a welcome from Wintour, a longtime friend of Beckham and his wife, Victoria. She praised Beckham’s generosity, kindness, and thoughtfulness, and his ability to remain humble despite becoming world-famous. The premiere was attended by a star-studded crowd, including Fisher Stevens’ costars Kieran Culkin, Nicholas Braun, and Adrien Brody, as well as Francesco Carrozzini, Georgina Chapman, and Tyrod Taylor. Welch moderated a discussion between Stevens and Beckham, highlighting seminal clips from the four-part documentary. Beckham revealed that he had been approached to make a documentary for many years, but only felt ready to do so after ten years of retirement. He emphasized the importance of assembling the right team, including Stevens as the director, to help jog his memory and piece together his incredible life story. Stevens, who initially admitted to being unfamiliar with Beckham’s legacy, expressed his awe at the star’s talent and celebrity after studying his career. The night was filled with laughs and sentimental moments, as clips from the documentary rolled in the Whitby theater. Attendees watched footage of Beckham organizing his impeccable closet and facing the backlash following his infamous ejection from the 1998 World Cup game between England and Argentina. Beckham praised Stevens for making him feel at ease and allowing him to share things he had never talked about before. The festivities culminated in a reception space for cocktails and small bites. Meanwhile, in the same theater, Roger Federer premiered his own documentary. While initially intended as a personal project for family and friends, Federer realized the footage’s significance and decided to share it with the world. The documentary will premiere on June 20 on Amazon Prime. Both Beckham and Federer’s documentaries are now available on Netflix and Amazon Prime, respectively.
