NFL Accused of Anti-Catholicism for Distancing from Harrison Butker’s Faith-Filled Speech

CatholicVote, a Catholic political advocacy group, has denounced the National Football League (NFL) for allegedly distancing itself from kicker Harrison Butker after his faith-filled commencement speech. Butker, a devout Catholic, criticized President Biden’s pro-abortion stance and touched on other controversial topics such as IVF and diversity. The NFL’s statement expressing commitment to inclusion prompted CatholicVote to question whether that commitment extended to Catholics and those holding traditional moral beliefs. The group highlighted the backlash Butker faced, including from the wife of an LA Rams quarterback, who labeled his speech as “cult-like.” CatholicVote emphasized the “anti-Catholic bigotry” faced by Butker and urged the NFL to reconsider its stance on Catholics and traditional values. The NFL has yet to respond to CatholicVote’s letter.
