Devastating Apartment Fire Claims 14 Lives in Hanoi

A horrific fire engulfed an apartment complex in Hanoi, Vietnam, on Friday, May 24, leaving 14 people dead and three hospitalized. The blaze erupted shortly after midnight in a densely populated area, engulfing the building in toxic gases and flames. Rescuers struggled to break through the building’s locked gate and shattered windows to rescue trapped individuals. The fire’s intensity was amplified by the courtyard’s stockpile of motorbikes, electric bicycles, and bicycles. Authorities are investigating the cause of the tragedy, the latest in a series of deadly fires in Vietnam.

Body Found in Rubble of Fire-Ravaged Edmonton Apartment, Suspect Faces Additional Charges

A tragic discovery was made more than 12 weeks after a fire destroyed an apartment building in Edmonton’s Old Strathcona area: a man’s body was found in the rubble, leading to manslaughter charges against a suspect already accused of arson. Ricardo Olivares, 70, had been reported missing by his family after the fire on January 26, 2024, but his remains were only discovered during a further search of the wreckage on April 22. The cause of death has been determined to be smoke inhalation, and the manner of death has been ruled a homicide. The accused, 44-year-old Jason Murray Zabos, was initially charged with arson and other offenses and is now facing additional charges in connection with Olivares’ death.
