For the past 25 years, the Draper Visual Arts Foundation has been providing scholarships and promoting art in the community through its annual Art Scholar Competition. This year’s competition is open to high school seniors in the Canyons School District and offers awards ranging from $100 to $1,000. The foundation also hosts the Art in the Barn Show and Sale, which is open to artists of all ages. Applications for the Art Scholar Competition are due by June 15th and can be submitted at drapervisualartsfoundation.org. Approximately 200 students from 15 elementary schools in Waukegan Community Unit School District 60 have their artwork on display at the Waukegan Public Library as part of the annual Elementary School Art Exhibit. The exhibit, which features a variety of artwork from kindergarteners through fifth graders, provides students with an opportunity to showcase their creativity to the community beyond the walls of their schools. Teachers select the artwork from their students, and the students receive certificates of achievement.
Join us at the Margaret Williams Theater on Saturday, April 27 for a special musical tribute to retired art professor and celebrated artist, Ben Jones. The Spirit of Life Ensemble, led by Daoud-David Williams, will take the stage in honor of Jones’ remarkable career. The show will feature guest performances by the NJCU Jazz Orchestra, vocalist Antoinette Montague, and spoken word artist Rashad Wright.
Currently halfway through a three-week residency at Aviva Studios, David Hoyle showcases a retrospective of his career and uses a cheeky and sometimes outrageous approach to deliver powerful messages. Despite the pressures of comedy and satire today, Hoyle remains determined to remind us that we all have the right to be who we are. Through the exhibition, live painting, and an upcoming cabaret night, he invites visitors to explore their senses and find a balance between frivolity and reflection.
