Edmonton police have requested an investigation by the independent police watchdog, ASIRT, after an officer shot a man in the city’s McCauley neighborhood. The incident occurred on Sunday morning when officers responded to a reported assault at a home near 109th Avenue and 93rd Street. According to a news release, a 33-year-old man assaulted another man at the residence. When police arrived, the suspect exited the residence carrying a weapon, resulting in a confrontation that led to officers discharging their firearms. The suspect sustained life-threatening injuries and is currently in stable condition in hospital. A nearby home was also struck by gunfire, although there were no injuries reported. ASIRT is now investigating the incident, which is standard procedure for serious incidents involving police in Alberta.

The family of Steven Nguyen is deeply disappointed following the release of the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) report on the fatal police shooting of their loved one in June 2021.
