Villa Park defeated El Dorado in Crestview League baseball, Newport Harbor topped Laguna Beach and Corona del Mar came out on top against Marina in Wave League play. In the Golden West League, Ocean View defeated Katella in baseball while Pacifica earned a decisive victory over Tustin in Empire League softball. Edison prevailed over Newport Harbor in Sunset League softball and, in boys golf, Tesoro and Crean Lutheran emerged victorious in South Coast and Empire League competitions, respectively.

Brooks Lee, the Twins’ top prospect, will miss another month due to a herniated disc in his back. Lee, who was initially diagnosed with back spasms, is now being treated by specialist Dr. Robert Watkins and has started doing light baseball activity.
Following a setback against St. Augustine, the Crusaders have won three straight games, including a victory over Archbishop Spalding, one of the top teams in the Northeast. Senior Landon Mack, who leads the state with eight home runs, has been a key contributor during the winning streak. The Crusaders’ pitching staff has also been solid, with Chase Brandt striking out seven in five innings against Moorestown on Tuesday.
Matawan High School’s baseball team maintained its undefeated status with a 7-1 victory against Manasquan High School. Ace pitcher Brandon Falco and reliever Andrew Gendi combined for an impressive performance on the mound, striking out 11 batters and limiting Manasquan to just one hit. The offense provided ample support, as Andrew Gendi drove in two runs with a 3-for-4 outing and Bryan McCartin contributed three RBIs.
Old Bridge High School’s baseball team secure an impressive 8-0 victory over South Brunswick at Matawan, extending their winning streak to an impressive six games. Michael Altman’s double and two RBIs proved crucial in the victory, with Old Bridge breaking the game open with seven runs in the pivotal fifth inning.
Ryan Quinones’ two-run double capped off a thrilling 5-4 victory for Scotch Plains-Fanwood over New Providence in a high school baseball clash. The Pioneers staged a late rally, but the Raiders prevailed with a walk-off run in the bottom of the sixth.
Johnny Laurick, a star pitcher for Camden Tech, showcased an extraordinary performance in a 12-1 victory over Winslow. Laurick’s impressive five-inning stint saw him strike out 12 batters while allowing only one earned run on a mere 56 pitches. The Camden Tech offense also shone, with Brayden Falcone contributing two RBIs and one run, and Denzel Wiggins adding two RBIs and one run. Winslow’s lone run came from Darian Dillard.
Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Jakob Junis was rushed to the hospital after being struck in the neck with a ball during batting practice in a freak accident Monday. Junis was “conscious, alert and responsive. He was sent to the hospital for further evaluation,” according to a tweet from the team. The incident is exceedingly rare, as pitchers rarely throw live batting practice to their team’s hitters during the season. Junis, who was already on the injured list with a shoulder injury, is coming off the best season of his career statistically.
The Boston Red Sox have signed pitcher Danny Kirwin to a minor league deal after seeing his impressive video online. Kirwin, a right-hander, pitched last season for Rider University and has been training for a season playing independent baseball. Kirwin topped out at 96.2 mph and averaged 95.1 mph on his fastball in a recent indoor bullpen session. He also showed good movement on his pitches. The Red Sox apparently saw enough potential in Kirwin to give him a chance in their minor league system.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and minority owner of the Royals, Patrick Mahomes, may be making an appearance at the team’s spring training in the near future. Despite being drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 2014, Mahomes has a strong baseball background with his father being a professional pitcher. The Chiefs quarterback has expressed interest in participating in spring training, and Royals general manager J.J. Picollo has extended an open invitation.
