Bengaluru Breaks 133-Year Record with Highest Rainfall in June

Bengaluru witnessed an unprecedented downpour on Sunday, receiving 111 mm of rainfall, surpassing the previous highest single-day rainfall record for June set in 1891. This torrential rainfall, coupled with an additional 29.7 mm received on June 1, has already exceeded the average monthly rainfall for June. As a result, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts in Karnataka, including Bengaluru, until June 5.

Heavy Rainfall Batters Bengaluru, Leading to Airport Disruptions and Citywide Waterlogging

Bengaluru endured a night of relentless rainfall and strong winds, resulting in severe disruptions at Kempegowda International Airport. Numerous flights faced delays or diversions as the airport was temporarily inaccessible for landings. Simultaneously, the city grappled with severe waterlogging as streets inundated, affecting several localities. The heavy rainfall is part of a larger weather pattern predicted to bring continuous precipitation to the south interior Karnataka region over the next few days. The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert, urging caution regarding the ongoing weather conditions.

Bengaluru Rains Bring Respite After Dry Spell

Bengaluru has welcomed intermittent rainfall over the past few days, providing much-needed relief to residents. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted partly cloudy skies with occasional spells of rain or thundershowers until May 12. The downpour has caused waterlogging in several parts of the city, including major thoroughfares such as Hebbal flyover and Maharani underpass. Due to strong gusts, many trees have fallen in areas like Jayamahal Road and Kathriguppe. Notably, this rainfall comes after Bengaluru experienced its driest April in 41 years, with no rainfall recorded throughout the month. Last month, the city endured its second-hottest day in April in at least 50 years, with temperatures reaching 38.5 degrees Celsius. Netizens took to social media to express their reactions to the rainfall, highlighting the contrast with the recent water shortage crisis and the challenges posed by waterlogging.
