Man in Critical Condition After Being Pulled from Bow River

A man is in critical condition in hospital after being pulled from the Bow River on Thursday afternoon. Calgary police say around 3:45 p.m. they were called to an area along the river near the Crowchild Trail overpass in the city’s northwest for reports an unresponsive man was floating down the river. The Calgary Fire Department helped to remove the man from the water. He was then transported to hospital in critical condition. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police.

Calgary Braces for Flood Risk as Rivers Rise

After experiencing drought conditions, Calgary now faces flood concerns as the Elbow and Bow rivers surge with higher-than-normal water levels. Environmental experts caution that June is a critical month for both water supply and flood risk, as precipitation patterns can change rapidly. Reservoirs are releasing water at normal rates, but officials emphasize the need to be prepared for potential high-flow events. Striking a balance between releasing water to control flooding and capturing runoff to replenish reservoirs is crucial, as a missed opportunity could delay recovery until next spring.

Opposition to Glenbow East Dam Proposal Grows Amidst Alberta Government’s Upstream Reservoir Feedback Gathering

As the Government of Alberta seeks public feedback on proposals for upstream reservoirs on the Bow River, opposition to the Glenbow East Dam option continues to gain momentum. The Glenbow Ranch Park Foundation, led by former Calgary mayoral candidate and current CEO, Jeromy Farkas, has voiced concerns about the dam’s potential impact on the newly opened Haskayne Legacy Park and Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park. The foundation advocates for the relocation of the Ghost Dam as a more environmentally friendly and less disruptive option. The latest round of public engagement, which concludes on May 13, presents two options for consideration, while a third option near Morley remains under assessment. The Glenbow East Dam, with an estimated cost of $992 million, faces criticism for its potential effects on park space and lack of flood protection for nearby areas. The Ghost Dam relocation option, estimated at $917 million, has gained support due to its minimal impact on wildlife and existing infrastructure.
