California’s Grid Faces Challenges from Electric Vehicle Surge

California’s ambitious goal of transitioning to all-electric passenger vehicles by 2035 requires a grid capable of handling increased demand. However, researchers have found that nearly two-thirds of the state’s feeder lines lack the capacity to support the anticipated surge in electric vehicle charging. Upgrading the grid to meet this demand could cost utilities as much as 40% of the existing grid’s capital cost.
