The Indian ceramic industry, particularly the hub in Morbi, is facing a potential severe blow as US tile manufacturers seek anti-dumping duties ranging from 400% to 800% on Indian tiles. This move could significantly impact the competitiveness of Indian tile exports to the US, which currently account for around Rs. 1,600 crore of the industry’s total exports worth Rs. 15,000 crore. The anti-dumping petition claims that India’s low-priced imports are hurting domestic manufacturers in the US. Despite recent challenges leading to a 10-15% decline in production, the industry had been optimistic about the future with new factories coming up. However, the anti-dumping duty threat has cast a shadow over these expansion plans.
