Chhattisgarh High Court Condemns Corporal Punishment in Schools

The Chhattisgarh High Court has strongly condemned the practice of corporal punishment in schools, deeming it a violation of children’s rights. The court dismissed a petition filed by a teacher accused of abetting the suicide of a student, highlighting that subjecting children to physical violence under the guise of discipline is inhumane and goes against their fundamental right to life and dignity.

Over 9,600 Children Wrongly Incarcerated in Adult Prisons in India: Study

A study by iProbono, a legal justice non-profit, has revealed that as many as 9,681 children were ‘wrongly’ incarcerated in adult prisons across India between January 2016 and December 2021. The report, titled “Incarceration of Children In Prisons in India,” highlights the ineffective implementation of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, which mandates the placement of children in juvenile homes rather than adult prisons.
