Oregon Class 6A Baseball: Midway Madness

The first half of the Oregon Class 6A baseball season has been filled with plenty of action. While West Linn entered the season as the favorite, a large pool of teams have emerged as contenders. Sunset remains undefeated at 16-0, while Jesuit, West Linn, Lake Oswego, Tualatin, Sprague, South Salem, and Wells have all posted impressive records. The Central Valley Conference has been one of the hottest leagues this spring, with both Sprague and South Salem standing among the state’s top teams. Wells has also been a surprise, upsetting previously unbeaten Sprague. The Three Rivers League remains competitive, with West Linn leading the way at 6-1. The Apollos have a good chance to unseat Jesuit’s two-year stranglehold on the Metro League, but they still have some tough matchups remaining on their schedule.

Quarterback Woes Hinder Team’s Contender Status

The team’s hopes of becoming serious contenders in 2023 were hampered by inconsistent quarterback play. The 26-year-old quarterback had a poor start to the season before suffering an injury in early November that ended his year. This marked a departure from his 2022 performance, where he earned a Pro Bowl nod alongside his wide receiver. Amidst the uncertainty surrounding the quarterback’s future with the team, reports indicate they are exploring a trade-up to select top quarterback prospect Drake Maye in the upcoming draft. Maye is projected to be among the first three quarterbacks taken, and experts believe the team may select him at number four. Currently holding the sixth slot in the draft, the team is reportedly impressed with Maye’s standout performances.
