Avalanche Studios Lays Off 9% of Workforce, Closes Two Locations

Avalanche Studios Group, the Swedish video game developer known for the Just Cause series and upcoming Xbox exclusive Contraband, has laid off approximately 50 employees and closed two of its five locations in New York and Montreal. The layoffs affected around 9% of the company’s workforce, which stands at around 550. The studio emphasizes the difficult nature of the decision, stating it’s necessary to secure a stable and sustainable future for the company. Despite the layoffs, Avalanche Studios continues to work on Contraband, an upcoming open-world co-op game set in a fictional 1970s setting. The game is scheduled to be published by Xbox Game Studios and is considered the studio’s most ambitious project to date.
