Cuba Upgrades Military Bases Amidst US Concerns of Chinese Espionage

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) has released satellite images indicating Cuba is upgrading its intelligence capabilities at four military bases. These upgrades, potentially linked to China, have sparked concerns about Chinese espionage activities aimed at the US. The report highlights recent construction activities, particularly at Bejucal, where suspected electronic monitoring equipment for China is being installed. The report further emphasizes the presence of a new base near Guantanamo Bay, raising security concerns for the US. While Cuba and China have refuted the claims, the US remains vigilant and maintains its commitment to security.

China to Resume Commercial Flights to Cuba via New Stopover Point

Scheduled commercial flights between China and Cuba will resume on May 17, 2024, after a meeting between Cuban Ambassador Alberto Blanco Silva and Chinese aviation officials. Air China will operate the route using Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, with two weekly flights. The new stopover point will be Madrid, Spain, eliminating visa restrictions for Chinese travelers to Cuba. However, the total flight distance will increase by 27.6% compared to the previous layover in Montreal. Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero’s visit to China last year highlighted the close relationship between the two countries, with Marrero expressing his hope for increased Chinese tourism after the resumption of flights.
