Scientists are concerned that a deadly animal disease known as chronic wasting disease (CWD) may be spreading to humans after two hunters died from a similar brain condition in 2022. CWD, which has been found in deer, elk, and other animals in North America and Europe, attacks the brain and nervous system, causing symptoms such as drooling, lethargy, and stumbling. The telltale blank stare of infected deer has led some to call CWD ‘zombie deer disease.’
