Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka has declared a holiday for all schools on June 27 due to heavy rains and a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The district administration has also advised fishermen to stay ashore and has cautioned the public to avoid going near the seashore or river banks.
Padmaraj R. Poojary, the Congress candidate who lost the Lok Sabha election in Dakshina Kannada, expressed optimism despite the defeat. He highlighted the party’s increased vote share and vowed to strengthen the party at the booth level in the district. Poojary also congratulated the winning BJP candidate, Captain Brijesh Chowta, and urged him to prioritize social harmony and development. Former Congress minister B. Ramanath Rai claimed a moral victory for the party and emphasized the continuing benefits of the State Government’s guarantee schemes.

This age-old tradition, known as ‘Kule Madime’ or ‘Pretha Maduve,’ is prevalent in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi and involves the marriage of a deceased person to a living individual.
BJP’s Dakshina Kannada Lok Sabha candidate, Capt. Brijesh Chowta, has expressed his intention to correct the ‘communally sensitive’ tag associated with the district, which he believes has been created by a few individuals. Chowta emphasized that the people of the region are peace-loving and inclusive, and he plans to consult with stakeholders to develop a strategy for moving forward. He also outlined his priorities for the district, including promoting economic growth through infrastructure development, software industries, and cultural heritage preservation.
The ‘Namma Nade Matha Katte Kade’ campaign, launched by Dakshina Kannada’s SVEEP committee, has gained traction with people from all political backgrounds joining forces to increase voter turnout in the district. Activities like oath-taking, flag hoisting, cultural programs, tree planting near booths, and cleanliness drives are part of the campaign. The SVEEP committee places special emphasis on polling stations with low voter turnout in the 2023 assembly election.
