Biden White House Whiffs on Business, Common Sense Ahead of Election

The Biden administration has rolled out over a dozen new initiatives and rules in a frantic attempt to boost its chances in the upcoming midterm elections. According to a new CNN poll, Trump is leading the president by six points, one of the biggest gaps yet. The survey also shows Trump inching ahead in several critical swing states.

The Biden administration’s flurry of activity includes new FTC rules that ban non-compete agreements, a re-write of Title IX, EEOC charges of racism against a company for avoiding hiring criminals, and more federal help on student loans.

Critics say the White House is panicked and that its policies are not well-thought-out. The Trump administration employed a similar strategy in its final months, ditching several policies rolled out late in President Obama’s second term. Biden returned the favor when he came to office.

New Federal Rule Requires Airlines to Provide Automatic Refunds for Canceled or Significantly Delayed Flights

The Biden administration has announced new rules requiring airlines to automatically issue cash refunds for flights that are canceled or significantly delayed, effective in late October. This ensures that passengers no longer have to request refunds and simplifies the process. The Department of Transportation (DOT) defines a significant change as a delay of more than three hours for domestic flights and more than six hours for international flights. Airlines can still offer alternative options, but they must prioritize passengers’ right to cash refunds. Other refund rights include changes in departure/arrival airports, downgraded service, or added connecting stops. Refunds must be issued automatically and within seven days for credit card purchases or 20 days for other payment methods.

Construction Headaches in Florida Towns

Numerous construction projects in Florida have led to severe traffic congestion, frustrating drivers and impacting businesses. In Palmetto, roadwork on US 41 has transformed the highway into a crawl, with residents complaining of hours-long delays. The construction has also negatively affected local restaurants, with customers hesitant to venture out due to prolonged travel times. Similar traffic backups have occurred on other roadway projects across the state, including the Rickenbacker Causeway, where concrete restoration led to hours of gridlock.

Airline Stocks Drop as New Refund Rule Takes Effect

A new Department of Transportation rule requires airlines to provide full refunds for canceled, delayed, or significantly changed flights. This has led to a decline in airline stock prices, with United Airlines, American Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Delta, and Southwest Airlines all experiencing losses. The rule also applies to checked bag fees if baggage is delayed by more than 12 hours for domestic flights or 15-30 hours for international flights. Additionally, airlines are now required to clearly disclose “junk fees” for baggage, reservation changes, and discounts that only apply to partial flights.
