NV Energy’s mascot Wattson has emerged from his burrow, while Clark County’s Mojave Max is still missing in action. Desert tortoises hibernate for several months during the year and typically emerge between March and May. Wattson’s emergence on Wednesday was unusually late, possibly due to sunlight exposure in his habitat. Mojave Max, the focus of an emergence contest, has yet to leave his burrow as of Tuesday. If he doesn’t emerge by Wednesday, April 24, he will break his record for latest emergence in the contest’s history.
