Bluesky Introduces Direct Messaging, Expanding Private Communication Options

Bluesky, the Twitter-like social media app, has implemented direct messaging (DM) functionality. Users with Bluesky accounts can now send private one-to-one messages directly within the app. By default, anyone a user follows on Bluesky can send them a DM, but this setting can be customized in the app’s settings. Sending a DM is simple and involves selecting the Chat icon, starting a new conversation, searching for the recipient, and sending the message. Bluesky plans to add support for images, other media formats, and group direct messages in the future. Additionally, the app aims to implement end-to-end encrypted messaging down the line.

Wattpad Discontinues Direct Messaging Feature

Wattpad, a popular community publishing platform, will be removing direct messages (DMs) from its platform on May 6th, 2023. The company claims that the feature has only been relevant to a small percentage of its user base and encourages users to communicate through public commenting and profile conversations. Wattpad notes that users will not be able to download or retrieve existing DMs. The company cited a limited utility for DMs and stated that one-to-one messaging has not supported the community aspect of the platform. However, the decision is also likely driven by concerns about platform safety, as DMs have been linked to grooming and harassment of minors.
