Cubs’ Hendricks, Smyly Land on IL; Cooper DFA’d, Mervis Recalled

Cubs Promote Mervis, Place Hendricks and Smyly on IL

The Chicago Cubs have called up first baseman Matt Mervis from Triple-A Iowa and placed pitchers Kyle Hendricks (lower back) and Drew Smyly (hip impingement) on the injured list. Mervis, 26, made his MLB debut last season but struggled offensively. However, he has rebounded in Triple-A this year, batting .288 with five home runs and six doubles. The Cubs also designated Garrett Cooper for assignment.
